Bringing environmental & societal benefit
Our sustainable solutions area focuses on products which help shape future performance for our customers and markets, by providing environmental and social benefits, whether that be to support CO2 reduction in Aerospace & Automotive through our lighter materials, or products that bring clinical benefit in the Medical device industry. As an example, if all new single aisle aeroplanes based on Boeing & Airbus’ long term build forecasts were produced with >50% PEEK composite materials, a saving of 50 million tonnes of CO2 could be achieved over the next 15 years.
Beyond lightweighting and durability benefits, our PEEK and PAEK polymers continue to offer reduced cycle times (with the potential for quicker manufacturing), as well as the associated properties that make our polymers one of the highest performing materials available. Ultimately our products can help bring a positive impact to society by supporting CO2 reduction in Transport markets. Our revenues to Transport (approximately 25-30% of Group revenue) are already defined as ‘green’ by FTSE Russell’s Green Revenues Index and in our own definition of sustainable products, these are closer to 50% (to include Medical revenues).
Whilst we seek to reduce our own energy, waste and water – and consequently our own CO2 footprint – based on the weight saving per application in Aerospace alone, our materials help to support CO2 savings a number of times greater than our own CO2 emitted.
Our customers continue to specify our polymers in many of their applications, whether it be in Aerospace to ‘fly lighter’, in Automotive to ‘reduce wear’ and ‘improve durability’, in Electronics to deliver ‘thinner, smaller and smarter’ devices, in Energy to ‘improve durability’ and ‘recover more’, or in Medical applications to help address an ageing global population. The demands on material performance across our markets remain strong. Achieving higher performance with less continues to be important, less material, less energy, less waste, less noise, less time and less cost. This requires innovation in developing solutions for our customers and markets.
As we move further downstream – beyond manufacturing polymers – into selected semi-finished products, our inherent innovation capabilities offer us the potential to deliver further performance and sustainability benefits for our customers and markets.
